Greetings to you in the name of our most blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I hope and pray that by God’s grace you are doing well! I know that the last eight months have been difficult for all of us! Nonetheless, I am excited and filled with joy and great expectations because I know that Our Lord is with us and He is working mightily in us and in the world. I can't wait to see what He does next!!!

In these days of ongoing change and uncertainty, I hope that you are making the Lord your refuge and strength! It is in Christ and Christ alone that we will find hope, help, strength and security! We have a Wonderful And All Powerful Savior who loves us and is committed to seeing us through any and every storm!

This morning I was thinking about the upcoming Christmas holiday and I found myself wondering what it will be like in light of our current situation. Will all the things I love to do at Christmas be cancelled or significantly changed? Will I still be able to enjoy special times with family and friends? What about the wonderful sights and smells, the beautiful music, the Christmas Eve Service, the great food & of course the smiles and laughter?

As I contemplated these things, this thought came into my mind and filled me with hope: All that Christmas was and really is remains the same! And it was then that I realized the heart of Christmas, the main event that should draw our focus and stir our memories is Jesus Christ! First and foremost, Christmas is a time to remember and celebrate what God has done for you! So it doesn’t really matter if some of my favorite traditions have to change this year! Christmas is realizing afresh just how much God loved you and I to send Jesus, His love wrapped so beautifully in a package that we could all receive and understand and appreciate. Why, if He hadn’t done that, we wouldn’t even have anything to celebrate. And so as we prepare to celebrate this special time of the year, I encourage you to stay focused on our Savior Jesus Christ, who came that we might live, and live abundantly!

I want to encourage you to affectionately remember that:

The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us.

The law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus.

The Lord of all emptied Himself and became a servant.

The Beloved One became the forsaken One.

The Righteous One was made sin.

The Richest of all became poor.

The Revered One became the rejected One.

The Eternal One tasted death.

The Risen One now lives in His people.

The Exalted One is coming again!

During this special season, it is my prayer that each of you will be encouraged by God’s love and be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas. During this season, my thoughts and prayers will be with each of you!

If there is anything Doug and I can do to help you or you have prayer requests, please let us know! We miss you all and look forward to that day when we can be together again!!! We are planning some special Christmas events that will enable us to fellowship and praise God together and I hope you will join us!

May the One who is worthy of all our praise, bless your Christmas in a multitude of ways! Have a joyous Christmas!

Love in Christ,

Clinging to Hope in the Storm https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/clinging-to-hope-in-the-storm https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/clinging-to-hope-in-the-storm#comments Sat, 17 Oct 2020 13:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/clinging-to-hope-in-the-storm Dear Church Family,

This seems to have been the longest year of our lives.  So much has happened in our church, our community, country and world.  If anyone had asked you last year what 2020 would bring, would you have predicted any of this?  It seems like every month, there’s been something new, either disastrous or traumatic happening in our nation.  We have experienced political division, the coronavirus pandemic, the economic shutdown, witnessing a horrible act of police brutality leading to protests and rioting, to the prolific wildfires in the west and hurricanes in the south.  Many people are terrified of what’s next.  With all this turmoil and uncertainty, we are watching our neighbors struggle and lose hope.  But that’s where we are supposed to step in.  It’s in times like these, we are to be like Christ.

As Paul said in Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.  In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God

something to be used to His own advantage;

rather, He made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

by becoming obedient to death—

even death on a cross!”

We can see here that Paul is calling us to not be focused on our own interests, but be concerned about the interests of others, just like our ultimate example; Jesus Christ.  Jesus endured becoming human.  Not just being human, but a humble servant who suffered death, and not just any death, death on a cross.  So, if He who created the universe can condescend to lovingly serve us and endure death on the cross for our sins, can we not also endure hardships and trials to serve God, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and our fellow man.

This is what Paul went on to explain in verses 14-16

“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.  Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold out firmly the word of life.”

Here he is calling on us to not grumble or complain, but instead shine brightly for Jesus in the midst of a “warped and crooked generation.”  If our attitude is one of humbly serving one another, then we will make Christ visible, especially now, in this very difficult time.

At this point you may be feeling guilty that you haven’t been accomplishing this goal during this time.  You too have been struggling with fear, anxiety, and despair.  This is where God desires to lift you up, to strengthen and encourage you.  You are not alone. He is right here with you, to show you that He has an amazing purpose for allowing all these trials in the world and also allowing them in your life.  He is there to strengthen and uphold you, so that you can not only survive these times but be victorious over them.

Romans 5:3-5

“… we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Since we know that God has a perfect purpose in our trials, we can lean into Him and embrace experiencing what He has for us.  That’s where we want to help.  Even though, we are not able to physically meet together, we are still meeting together online.  We are posting our Sunday worship services on our website and also our YouTube channel (just search “First Baptist San Mateo").  You can also go to our website (www.fbcsanmateo.org) to find out how to join our Adult Sunday School class or join our Wednesday Night Men’s and Women’s Bible Study.  The Children’s Ministry is meeting online every Sunday as well, and our Awana Ministry is back and in full swing.  Also, you can email Pastor Marc or myself if you need anything or to have the weekly prayer ministry pray for you.

I highly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to grow with us by joining us online for these special times together.  We hope and pray that you will be strengthened as you draw nearer to the Lord in these times.  Praying that you are growing deeply in the Lord in this time and that we will all be back together soon.

What We Need Most https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/what-we-need-most https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/what-we-need-most#comments Tue, 09 Jun 2020 13:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/what-we-need-most Dear Church Family,

I hope you are doing well! It is my prayer that you are being strengthened by the grace that is available to you in Christ Jesus! Although we are living in challenging times and many around us are fearful, stressed and anxious. As followers of Jesus we really can have peace and hope in the middle of this pandemic!

The past few months my wife Candace and I have been studying the book of Revelation. Our goal was not to try & figure out the meaning of unusual images and figures. We wanted to focus on the obvious and see what we could learn and apply to our present situation. We were encouraged & challenged by what Paul Minear said: “St John uses words the way poets do, recombining them in fresh ways so that old truth is freshly perceived. He takes truth that has been eroded to platitude by careless usage and sets it in motion before us in an animated & and impassioned dance of ideas.” It has been a rich, practical and rewarding study that has helped us better understand how we should approach life today. At the time this book was written, the churches in Asia Minor were suffering and experiencing the hatred and wrath of the Roman Empire. It was an incredible challenge for God’s people to live faithfully and with hope in the midst of a faithless generation. So what did they need to hear most from their Lord?

They didn’t need a detailed account of the future intended to be decoded centuries later. They didn’t need the assurance that someday God would punish the wicked and those who opposed the Gospel. They didn’t need an allegory to numb their pain and suffering. What they needed was a picture of the risen Lord Jesus, our hope and future! As you may know, the central theme in the Bible has always included God’s plan to create a community of people who are rightly related to Him and to one another. As Kenneth Boa said: the main character as it turns out, is Jesus Christ. His identity is hinted at throughout the Old Testament, and then stated explicitly in the New Testament. In the final book of the Bible Story, this glimpse into the future is revealed: In the world to come, God’s people will finally live the way God intended. Sin and evil will be eradicated. The corruption that infected God’s creation will give way to a new heaven and a new earth. We will have new bodies, incorruptible bodies and incorruptible minds. So much will change and be totally new. But this much will be the same: the central character will still be Jesus Christ. It is the grace of God, most clearly made manifest in the person and work of Jesus Christ that is the only possible foundation for a peace that promises to last throughout all eternity. We enjoy the grace that is ours now, even as we eagerly await the peace that will be ours in time. First grace, then peace. Always Jesus!

Brothers and sisters the key to finding lasting peace, joy & hope, the thing that you need more than anything else is Jesus! My prayer is that Jesus will become your life, your all! Although I wish we could be together in person, I am thankful that most of our ministries are up and running via Zoom.

If there is anything I can do to help you or pray for you please let me know! I miss you all and look forward to that day when we can all be together again!

Responding to Coronavirus https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your- https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your-#comments Mon, 06 Apr 2020 12:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your-

As I write this, people throughout the world are reeling and in living in fear of the Coronavirus. This virus is spreading quickly and every day we learn that more, & more people have become infected. We also learn that a growing number of nations are being significantly impacted by outbreaks of the Coronavirus. For many, life as they have known it appears to have been changed forever.

I would guess as you read these words, many of you are as surprised as I am by the devastating & deadly impact this rapidly spreading virus is having. To be honest, my emotions have ranged from simple concern to fear. I am certain that you have also been affected and impacted by these events.

Since the outbreak began I have had the opportunity to talk to quite a few people, both believers and unbelievers. In my discussions I discovered that many people have questions and are searching for answers. I have also found that most people are afraid and fear that things will only get worse.

As I reflected on the potential impact of this virus I realized that no matter what one?s religious beliefs, or view of God are, everyone is going to have to answer one key question: How am I going to live my life?

It seems to me that how you answer this question is going to play a significant role in determining the quality of your life, as well as your emotional state in thefuture.Wherewill you placeyour trust?Where will you find the resources to live? Will you place your hopein people? In government? In yourself and your own abilities?Or will you giveyourself wholeheartedly to God. Click here to read more...

Coronavirus Update 3/16/20 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-3- https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-3-#comments Fri, 03 Apr 2020 21:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-3- 3/16/20 Update

Since the County of San Mateo and the State of California have called for all citizens to shelter in place, until further notice, we will no longer be holding servcies, meetings, or any events at the church and the church offices are closed until further notice.  We ask that you not come by the church for any reason, unless you have called ahead and arranged for entrance to the church from someone on staff. The reason being, that we have people who are coming to the church to work on various necessary tasks who need to be protected from the virus.  We are still cleaning the church regularly and disinfecting all doors and surfaces so that critical administrative work can be done in safety.
Our updated ministry information is below:

  • All worship services will be performed with a small team per State guidelines and will be done either by live-stream or pre-recorded so that you can worship at home.  You can visit our Services page to view our worship services.
  • Youth ministry events are proceeding online and you can learn more by looking at our Youth Ministry page for more information.
  • We are currently working on preparing for continuing our Wedensday Night Bible study online and we'll soon have more information for you about how you can participate.  Please check back regularly on our Wednesday Bible Study page.

3/14/20 Update

I wanted to update everyone on some decisions we've made as a church leadership regarding the coronavirus (Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease has spread globally since 2019, resulting in the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.  The San Mateo County Health Department has issued a new statement (3/14) guiding organizations to now limit meetings to "essential gatherings of no more than 50" only.  They are allowing us to determine which gatherings/meetings as any group of 10 or more people within the same space.  They are granting a exceptions for "places of worship for purposes of conducting religious services or ceremonies."

Eventhough we are exempt from the 50 person limit, we normally don't have more than 50 people per service.  In addition, we are mandated to comply with all of the county regulations about social distancing, disinfecting of surfaces, and removing commonly touched items.  We have put in place all of these procedures.  We are also currently working to enable us to hold services online next Sunday (3/22), and we are evaluating Mid-week events.

We DO believe that our meeting together as a church is essential for the spiritual growth of the body of Christ, here at FBC. However, we have also determined that we should take the following steps and put a hold on the following meetings.

- Nonessential meetings (Elder Board and Leadership meetings) are cancelled for now.

- FBC Youth Group, Tuesday nights, will be re-evalutated for this week, and if held, will be limited in it's activity to minimize contact between students, and will be re-evaluated by the end of the week.

- Wednesday Night Bible study re-evalutated for this week, and if held, will be limited in it's activity to minimize contact between participants, and and will be re-evaluated by the end of the week.

- Awana Wednesday night ministry will be put on hold for now.  Ron and Cathy have been in touch with the families involved in this ministry and they have a plan to continue remotely.

- Worship choir will be put on hold for now.

- All other events and meetings scheduled for later in the month will be tentative based on the spread of the virus over the next few weeks.

- Sunday Worship services, Adult Bible study, Youth at 11:00am, and children's programs for 9:30am (not 11:00 am) will continue for now, implementing the changes that we've outlined on the FBC webpage and previous post.
(We advise you to not come to church if you are sick or have any simptoms.  If you are well and choose to come to church, please do not shake hands, hug, or make physical contact with others.  We'll suspend all activities that involve touching common services: coffee/donuts, offering bag, bulletins, etc).  And we have been thoroughly disinfecting all surfaces throughout the church on a weekly basis. (sanctuary pews in between services)

Since the numbers of infected in SM County seem to be increasing and the time period of the potency of this virus is the way it is, the events that are still happening may be cancelled or curtailed very soon as well.  We will continue to seek the Lord for His guidance and wisdom as to how we proceed.  We are confident that the Lord is in control and will give us wisdom through this time.  It is our desire to serve our community and not put people at risk, therefore we will be evaluating any and all events in the future.  We are confident that the Lord is working in all this to bring glory to Himself and that we can shine the light of Christ as we follow Him.

The Primacy of the Word https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/the-primacy-of-the-word https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/the-primacy-of-the-word#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2019 16:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/the-primacy-of-the-word A number of years ago I decided to read through the entire Bible during the summer months.  More clearly than ever before I could see that the Bible was not simply a collection of stories, but rather a comprehensive guide to daily living.  In the Bible everything fits together, from Genesis to Revelation.  At times it all seems so clear and easy to understand.  Other times when I look closely at a passage things cease to be clear.

Over theyears I have discovered that passages of scripture which seemed clear from a distance are not so clear when I study them more fully.  At times it would seem that the harder I look, the more difficult it becomes to understand.  Has that ever happened to you?  It's not always easy to understand God's Word is it?  I find that understanding God's Word isn't the only tough part... the really tough part is applying what God has said to my daily life.  [read more]

Coming Together https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coming-together https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coming-together#comments Wed, 10 Oct 2018 13:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/coming-together

In the book of Acts, Luke paints a beautiful picture of the early church and how it functions.

“They were continually de- voting themselves to the apos- tles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feel- ing a sense of awe and many wonders and signs were tak- ing place through the apostles. And all who had believed were together, and had all things in common; and they began sell- ing their things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day, continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they wre taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart: praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord add- ed to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47

When you read about the be- ginning of the Christian church described in Acts 2, a number of characteristics jump out at you. For example, the early Chris- tians were committed to growing

in their knowledge of God and His Word so they devoted them- selves to the apostles’ teaching. It’s obvious that they wanted to grow deep in God and learn as much as they possibly could. As John Stott notes, “they under- stood that the living church is a learning church.”

The first Christians also madesharing their lives with one an- other a priority. There were no isolationists or rugged individ- ualists; they were committed to God and His Word and they were committed to growing together as one. So they spent time building healthy relationships and hang- ing out with each other. Simply put, they were constantly togeth- er for teaching and prayer, fo fel- lowship and for meals. Time WITH God https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/time-with-god https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/time-with-god#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2018 13:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/time-with-god

Isn’t it so easy to get focused on the wrong thing? In life, with all the challeng- es we face, it seems that keeping our eyes on Christ amidst all the demands for our time, attention, money, etc, canbe difficult. Unless spending time withHim is a daily part of our lives. If drawing near to the Lord is as routine as all the other daily things in our lives, then we learn to see all of life in relation to Him. In other words, all of life’s experiences happen with Him in mind. When we are aware of His presence continually with us, then everything we see, feel, and do is done with Him. Colossians 3:17 comes alive, “Whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father.”

It’s amazing how when we are tak- ing time to really be with God and be in His presence in a place of silence and solitude, living in Him through out the day comes naturally. Then, when deci- sions come, going to Him and waiting onHim comes naturally. We find that wereally don’t want to do anything without knowing what the Lord wants or desires to say to us about it.

Far too often in the past I’ve found myself desiring to know God only for theblessings and benefits He may bring. Iwould take time to do my devotions so that I could know what He wanted and therefore I could do whatever was need- ed to make my family healthy, ministry successful, friendships better, or future secure. But God has been showing me how He desires to change that mind- set and simply seek Him for His own sake. He wants me just to know Him and not desire any outcome or blessing. Through this, He brings such freedom

and joy when we simply desire Him, alone. One of Henry Blackaby’s recent devotionals best explained this issue: Click here for more...

Your Opportunity - If You Will Ask Him https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your-opportunity---if-you-will-ask-him https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your-opportunity---if-you-will-ask-him#comments Wed, 18 Apr 2018 10:00:00 -0700 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/your-opportunity---if-you-will-ask-him

Have you ever wondered how God might want to use you to further His Kingdom? Is it possible that He might want you to serve Him at work, or school, or even in your neighborhood? I often talk to people who want to serve the Lord but they don’t know how to do so outside of the church.

When I first became a Christian, I thought the only way to serve the Lord was at church or in a mission organization. It never even occurred to me that I could serve God where I worked, or in the community in which I lived. Then one day I was having lunch with my pastor and he asked me the strangest question: “How are you serving God at work? What kind of ministry do you have at U.P.S.?” I really didn’t know how to respond. That day my pastor helped me understand that God wanted to use every aspect of my life to further His Kingdom. And he gave me some great advice, “Grow and bloom where God has you.”

Over the years, I have learned that God intentionally plants His people in places where they can grow and serve Him. It is God’s desire that we, His people, stand out and make Him visible to those around us, whether at work, school, home or even the grocery store. The reality is God has a unique ministry for each of us. He wants to work through us and He promises to supply all the power and strength we need. All He asks is that you make whatever you have available to Him. And if you are willing to do that, He will take it from there and the adventure of a lifetime will begin. Click here to read more...

A Time to Remember and Give Thanks https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/a-time-to-remember-and-give-thanks https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/a-time-to-remember-and-give-thanks#comments Tue, 06 Mar 2018 12:00:00 -0800 https://www.fbcsanmateo.org/blog/post/a-time-to-remember-and-give-thanks

I would like to direct your attention to a passage that teaches us what real love looks like. As you will see this love isn’t based on sentiment, it’s a love of active choice, one that is not dependent on favorable conditions. This is a love that gives of self to serve others.

Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glo- ri ed, and God is glori ed in Him; if God is glori ed in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him im- mediately. Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:31-35

Jesus was hours away from His death, it was an intimate time of fellow- ship with His disciples and those closest to Him and Judas had just left the upper room to betray Him. The departure of Judas from the upper room initiated a sequence of events that would result in Jesus’ death and glori cation. So Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glori ed, and God is glori ed in Him.” The word now indicates the process of glori ca- tion had commenced. Read more...
